Canirac reports that 96% of affected establishments are local micro-businesses facing severe financial challenges.

Decline in Tourism Hits Local Gastronomy

The restaurant industry in Los Cabos is experiencing one of its toughest periods of the year due to the annual low tourist season. According to the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac), local dining venues are reporting a 25% to 35% decline in overall sales.

Óscar Morando Villa, president of Canirac Los Cabos, confirmed that all 144 affiliated establishments are facing a challenging operational environment caused by lower visitor numbers.

Local Micro-Businesses Suffer Highest Impact

The industry leader highlighted that the structural composition of the local market makes small businesses particularly vulnerable to low-occupancy months.

Unlike major corporate chains, local venue owners operate with limited financial buffers:

  • Local Micro-Businesses: Represent 96% of all chamber-affiliated restaurants.

  • Major Chains & Corporate Brands: Account for the remaining 4% with greater financial capacity.

  • Documented Closures: A total of 27 restaurants in Los Cabos have closed permanently since 2025.

High Hopes for Final Quarter Recovery

Despite current losses, the local food service sector remains optimistic about the final quarter of the year. Business owners anticipate a strong financial rebound driven by major international events.

Key high-profile competitions expected to boost tourism include the Bisbee’s Fishing Tournament in October, as well as the PGA Tour golf tournament and the iconic Baja 1000 race in November.
