SEPADA's Initiative to Aid Local Producers
The Secretary of Fishing, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA) of Baja California Sur, José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán, has announced a significant initiative aimed at supporting local farmers in the Comondú region. In collaboration with the Integral Port Administration (API), SEPADA has successfully transported 600 bales of forage sorghum from the Santo Domingo Valley nursery to producers in San Miguel and San José de Comondú. This effort is part of the commitments made during a recent work tour in the area.
"We are committed to supporting our local farmers, especially in times of drought, by providing essential resources such as forage for their livestock,"
said Bermúdez Beltrán.
In addition to the 600 bales delivered to the aforementioned producers, 200 bales are allocated for farmers in Cadejé. Currently, the nursery has a total availability of 1,000 bales and is actively cultivating forage sorghum, with plans to produce an additional 5,000 bales within the next 45 days. This initiative not only aims to provide immediate relief but also to ensure a sustainable supply of forage for the region's livestock.
Investment in Agricultural Development
The revitalization of the Santo Domingo Valley nursery represents a substantial investment of 5 million pesos, which has enabled the cultivation of both corn and forage sorghum. For this year, the nursery is projected to yield 3,500 bales from the five hectares currently under cultivation. This investment is crucial for addressing the challenges faced by local farmers, particularly those affected by prolonged drought conditions.
"The reactivation of this nursery is a vital step in ensuring that our agricultural sector remains resilient and capable of supporting our livestock farmers,"
emphasized Bermúdez Beltrán.
The nursery's production capabilities are designed to prioritize areas that have been severely impacted by drought, providing essential feed for livestock in grazing areas. This aligns with the broader actions taken by the state government to support the agricultural and livestock sectors during challenging climatic conditions.
Legislative Support for Drought Management
In conjunction with these agricultural initiatives, the state government has also implemented the Drought Attention Plan and the Livestock Life Insurance program, which have been incorporated into state legislation. These measures are designed to provide ongoing support for families engaged in livestock farming throughout Baja California Sur.
"By embedding these support mechanisms into our legislation, we ensure that they remain available as vital resources for our ranching families,"
stated Bermúdez Beltrán.
The combination of immediate aid through the distribution of forage sorghum and the establishment of legislative support structures reflects a comprehensive approach to tackling the challenges posed by drought. This dual strategy not only addresses current needs but also lays the groundwork for a more resilient agricultural sector in the future. As the state continues to navigate the impacts of climate change, initiatives like these are essential for sustaining local economies and ensuring food security for the region.
