Mexican Cyclists Dominate the Regional Velodrome

Athletes from Baja California Sur continue to leave a strong mark on the international sports stage. Representing Mexico at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, local cyclists delivered an impressive performance, bringing home a rich collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals across multiple track and road events.


The standout Mexican squad included Edgar Verdugo, Yuli Verdugo, Ricardo Peña, Sebastián Ruiz, and Andrea Robles, all of whom proved their elite competitive level by stepping onto the podium in their respective disciplines.


Medal Breakdown: How BCS Athletes Claimed the Podium

The thrilling days of competition at the velodrome and on the road produced memorable results for the national team:

  • Sprint Events:


    • In the Men’s Team Sprint, Edgar Verdugo, joining forces with Ridley Malo and Jafet López, captured the gold medal and earned the title of Central American champions for Mexico.


    • In the Women’s Team Sprint, Yuli Verdugo replicated that success alongside Daniela Gaxiola and Jessica Salazar, claiming another gold medal. Yuli also secured a bronze medal in the Individual Sprint event, marking her second podium finish of the Games.


  • Team Pursuit and Time Trial:


    • In the Men’s Team Pursuit, Ricardo Peña and Sebastián Ruiz, competing alongside Ignacio Prado and Ulises Castillo, earned a hard-fought silver medal.


    • In the Women’s Team Pursuit, Andrea Robles claimed the silver medal for Mexico alongside team members María Gaxiola, Sofía Arreola, and Yareli Acevedo.


    • Sebastián Ruiz added another podium to his record by finishing third in the Men’s Individual Time Trial, taking home the bronze.


  • Golden Finish in the Omnium:


    • Ricardo Peña delivered an outstanding performance by becoming the Central American champion in the highly demanding Track Cycling Omnium, capturing gold. He later claimed a second gold medal paired with Ignacio Prado in another featured track event on the official program.

These achievements take place during the 25th edition of the region's most historic multi-sport event. Held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 24 to August 8, 2026, the Games feature more than 6,000 athletes from 37 countries and territories.

Boasting a program of 40 sports, the event serves as a crucial milestone within the Olympic preparation cycle. It brings together delegations from countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the host nation as they prepare for major upcoming international events like the Pan American Games and the Olympics.
