Significant Steps Towards Desalination in Comondú

Governor's Commitment to Sustainable Development

Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío recently attended the formal delivery of the Environmental Impact Manifestation (MIA) and the Technical Justification Study for a desalination unit project in the ejido Matancitas, Comondú municipality. These studies were developed by the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) for Grupo ARBA. The governor's presence underscores the importance of sustainable water solutions in the region, which is crucial for the development of local communities.

"Water and energy are vital elements for the sustainable development of our localities," Castro Cosío stated during the event. "It is essential to have scientifically supported alternatives with the least possible impact on the environment."

The governor was joined by UABCS rector Dante Arturo Salgado González, Comondú's municipal president Roberto Pantoja Castro, ejidatarios, and local business leaders. This collaborative effort highlights the need for a multidisciplinary approach to tackle the pressing water scarcity issues faced by the region.

The Role of Scientific Research

Castro Cosío acknowledged the contributions of the 60 researchers from UABCS, who utilized a multidisciplinary vision to analyze the area's conditions and the potential impacts of the desalination initiative. "Linking scientific knowledge with a social perspective helps generate alternatives that respond to the needs of rural communities,"

he emphasized, pointing out the importance of integrating local insights into scientific studies.

The studies presented consist of over 2,000 pages, detailing the proposed infrastructure for comprehensive water desalination and the use of clean energy to minimize carbon footprints. This approach aims to mitigate any adverse environmental effects while providing a sustainable water source for the region.

Next Steps in Environmental Evaluation

The governor highlighted that the submission of these studies is a significant step towards advancing the evaluation and, if applicable, obtaining authorization from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), in accordance with current environmental regulations. The focus remains on protecting ecosystems and ensuring the well-being of the population.

"The state government maintains a policy of support and coordination with communities, authorities at all levels, and productive sectors to create alternatives that improve living conditions and promote sustainable development in the state,"

Castro Cosío added.
