Meeting with SEMARNAT

In a significant step towards sustainable development, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío held a working meeting in Mexico City with Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, the head of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). The meeting aimed to present proposals focused on the use of clean energy, water desalination, and the sustainable management of natural resources in Baja California Sur. This initiative reflects the state's commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental preservation.

Among the attendees were Comondú's municipal president, Roberto Pantoja Castro, and the rector of the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), Dante Arturo Salgado González. The discussions highlighted a comprehensive desalination project proposed by Grupo Arba México for the Matancitas ejido in Comondú. The project includes an environmental impact study to assess its feasibility, which is crucial for ensuring that it meets ecological standards.

"We must ensure that our development projects align with environmental regulations and community needs,"

Castro Cosío emphasized during the meeting.

Clean Energy Initiatives

One of the central themes of the proposals is the integration of clean energy sources to minimize the carbon footprint associated with the desalination project. By utilizing renewable energy, the project aims to mitigate potential environmental impacts, thereby promoting a more sustainable approach to resource management.

The governor's vision extends beyond water management; it encompasses a broader strategy for economic diversification. In the tourism sector, Castro Cosío proposed streamlining the permitting process for local service providers involved in whale watching and swimming with whale sharks and orcas. This initiative aims to enhance the region's tourism offerings while generating jobs and income for local families.

"We need to diversify our economy and create opportunities for our communities,"

he stated, highlighting the importance of tourism in the region's economic landscape.

Collaboration for Sustainable Growth

Castro Cosío underscored the necessity of collaboration among authorities, businesses, and communities to evaluate these proposals effectively. He believes that maintaining open communication and cooperation is vital for ensuring that development aligns with environmental standards and the needs of the population.

The governor reiterated that the advancement of Baja California Sur must occur in harmony with the conservation of its natural heritage. This approach not only safeguards the environment but also ensures that future generations can enjoy the region's unique ecological treasures.

"Our development must progress while respecting and preserving our natural patrimony,"

Castro Cosío concluded, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in the region's growth.

As Baja California Sur moves forward with these initiatives, the collaboration between government entities, local businesses, and educational institutions will be crucial in shaping a sustainable future for the region. The proposed projects represent a significant step towards a more environmentally conscious approach to development, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the expense of the region's natural resources.
