A Celebration of Tradition and Community
In the vibrant setting of the Traditional Fiestas of La Ribera in Los Cabos, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío officially launched the seventh edition of the Copa Presidente 2026. This annual sport fishing tournament has become a significant event, attracting 69 participating teams, along with families, fishermen, entrepreneurs, and visitors from various regions. The event not only celebrates the sport but also fosters community spirit and economic activity in the area.
During the opening ceremony, Governor Castro emphasized the impressive growth of sport fishing in Baja California Sur. He noted that 2026 has already seen 78 fishing tournaments held, a significant increase from 49 tournaments in 2022 and 102 in 2025. He expressed optimism about surpassing last year's record, stating:
"Participation continues to grow, and this speaks to our status as a global reference for sport fishing."
Economic Impact and Community Engagement
The Copa Presidente serves as more than just a competition; it is a catalyst for local economic development. Governor Castro highlighted how these events reflect the identity of the communities in Baja California Sur, promoting family gatherings, attracting tourists, and generating income for local businesses. He remarked on the importance of these tournaments in supporting charitable causes, as part of the proceeds from some events are allocated to social institutions.
"These spaces reflect the identity of the Sudcalifornian towns, fostering family interaction, attracting visitors, and generating income for the localities."
The tournament also features substantial prizes, with 100,000 pesos awarded to the top competitors in categories such as tuna, dorado, and marlin, alongside a total prize pool exceeding 600,000 pesos in Jack Pots. This financial incentive not only enhances the competitive spirit but also encourages participation from a broader range of anglers.
Commitment to Sustainable Fishing Practices
Governor Castro reaffirmed the commitment to sustainable fishing practices through the Fondo para la Protección de los Recursos Marinos (FONMAR). He stated that the government will continue to support sport fishing with a focus on responsible and sustainable use of marine resources. This approach is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance while promoting recreational fishing.
"Through FONMAR, we will continue to support sport fishing with a focus on responsible and sustainable use of natural resources."
The event was attended by notable figures, including José Manuel Larumbe Pineda, the acting mayor of Los Cabos; Lisandro Olachea Burgoin, representing the director of FONMAR; and Juan García Davis, the municipal director of Fishing and Aquaculture for the Los Cabos City Council. Their presence underscores the collaborative effort between government and local authorities to enhance the sport fishing scene in Baja California Sur.
As the tournament unfolds, it showcases not only the skill and passion of the participants but also the rich cultural heritage of Baja California Sur, making it a highlight of the region's sporting calendar. The Copa Presidente continues to strengthen the bond between community, sport, and the environment, ensuring that the legacy of sport fishing thrives for generations to come.
