2026 Goal: Baja California Sur Projects Production of 10,000 Head of Goat Livestock

Baja California Sur reaffirms its ranching vocation with an ambitious goal for 2026: reaching the production of 10,000 head of goat livestock. This goal, promoted by the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA) and local producer associations, seeks to strengthen regional food security and consolidate the state as a benchmark in breeding goats adapted to arid climates.

The success of goat production in the peninsula is largely due to the incredible resilience of these animals and the specialization of South Californian ranchers. Unlike other types of livestock, goats efficiently utilize the area's native vegetation, making them a sustainable and profitable option for families in the mountainous and rural areas of municipalities such as Mulegé, Comondú, and La Paz.

To achieve this record figure in 2026, authorities have implemented programs for genetic improvement, animal health, and pen modernization. The economic impact of these 10,000 head will be reflected not only in meat sales but also in the value chain of derived products, especially in the artisanal goat cheese industry, which enjoys growing prestige in national and international markets. This boost to the goat sector is a commitment to keeping families rooted in their communities and to economic development that respects our state's natural conditions.
