Ecological Shield: Protection Intensified at San José Estuary to Eradicate Forest Fires

The Los Cabos Directorate of Ecology and Environment has launched a reinforced surveillance and prevention operation in the State Ecological Reserve of the San José del Cabo Estuary. With the arrival of the 2026 dry season, authorities have prioritized the mitigation of forest fire risks, applying the technical guidelines of the updated Management Plan. This governing instrument, endorsed by the Advisory Council, ensures that protection actions have the necessary legal and methodological support to safeguard this critical wetland, which has historically been vulnerable to human-caused blazes.

From a risk management and conservation perspective, this year's key is professionalization. The municipality has consolidated a strategic alliance with the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), becoming a state leader in brigade training. These actions include the creation and maintenance of strategic firebreaks, which serve as physical barriers to contain the spread of flames, thus protecting native flora and migratory bird nesting areas.

A determining factor in reducing incidents has been the control of irregular overnight stays within the reserve. By limiting access to homeless individuals who lit campfires, the number of fire outbreaks has dropped drastically. Joint work with the San José del Cabo Fire Department ensures immediate reaction capacity. Protecting the Estuary is not just a cleaning task but an exercise in environmental security that ensures this oasis continues to function as the main climate regulator and biological reserve of the municipal seat.
