Ecological Shield: PROFEPA Strengthens Environmental Surveillance and Training in Baja California Sur for 2026

Protecting the vast natural resources of Baja California Sur is not a job for central offices alone. This March 2026, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has intensified its training and prevention sessions in the state, focusing on empowering local communities and productive sectors. Through workshops on environmental legislation, complaint procedures, and wildlife management, the federal authority seeks to reduce environmental crimes through strategic prevention. A fundamental pillar of this program is the strengthening of the Participatory Environmental Surveillance Committees (CVAP).

From an environmental compliance management and risk analysis perspective, surveillance effectiveness is measured through the Regulatory Compliance Index ($RCI$), evaluating the ratio of inspections, irregularities, and corrective actions.

In 2026, PROFEPA emphasized that prevention is significantly more cost-effective than damage remediation. By training tourism and fishing sectors, the impact on critical ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs is minimized.

In conclusion, civil organizations and community groups interested in joining surveillance committees are recommended to contact the state PROFEPA delegation for official certification. Citizen surveillance is the force that multiplies the law's reach. For the remainder of 2026, these sessions are expected to extend to the most remote areas of the Sierra de la Giganta and Vizcaíno.
