The Government of Baja California Sur, through the Ministry of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Mobility, Environment, and Natural Resources (SEPUIMM), has launched a historic call: the Citizen Consultation for the development of the State Strategy on Biodiversity (ECUSBEBCS). This process seeks to integrate the vision, experience, and proposals of civil society, academics, indigenous communities, and productive sectors into a guiding document that guarantees the protection and sustainable use of South Californian natural wealth for the coming decades.

Baja California Sur is one of the states with the greatest biodiversity in Mexico, hosting unique ecosystems ranging from desert oases to the most productive marine sanctuaries in the world. However, the pressure of urban development, climate change, and industrial activities pose challenges that cannot be solved solely from a government desk. The consultation seeks to have citizens identify local priorities, point out critical threats, and propose innovative solutions that balance economic growth with environmental preservation.

The consultation process will be carried out through various platforms, including in-person workshops in all five municipalities and a digital portal for receiving written proposals. The thematic axes include the conservation of species at risk, the restoration of degraded ecosystems, environmental education, and the strengthening of governance. This strategy not only aims to meet international commitments but to create a tailor-made plan for the specific needs of the peninsula, recognizing that no one knows the territory better than those who inhabit it.

Citizen participation in these types of initiatives is fundamental to providing environmental public policies with legitimacy. The State Government has emphasized that the ECUSBEBCS will not be a document for the shelf but a roadmap with concrete actions and evaluable goals. All South Californians are invited to join this collective effort, reaffirming that the conservation of biodiversity is a common task that defines our identity and ensures the well-being of future generations in this paradise called Baja California Sur.
