Urgent Measures as Hurricane Simon Approaches BCS

State Council of Civil Protection Meets
On Wednesday, the State Council of Civil Protection convened to discuss the latest developments regarding Hurricane Simon, which has recently weakened to a Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío emphasized the importance of public vigilance and preparedness in light of the hurricane's trajectory.
"I urge the citizens to take precautions and stay alert to the evolution of Hurricane Simon,"
stated Governor Castro during the meeting.
As of 9:00 AM local time on October 14, the hurricane's center was located approximately 260 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 400 kilometers south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas. The storm is currently moving southwest at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds reaching 150 kilometers per hour and gusts exceeding that speed.
Expected Impact and Precautions
The National Meteorological Service has forecasted accumulated rainfall between 25 to 50 millimeters, with localized downpours potentially reaching up to 75 millimeters in central and southern Baja California Sur. Additionally, elevated wave heights and strong currents are expected along the coasts in the coming days, prompting the closure of the ports in La Paz and Los Cabos to smaller vessels as a precautionary measure.
"The preventive work of Civil Protection institutions, the Armed Forces, and civil society has been crucial in facing the potential effects of this meteorological phenomenon,"
acknowledged the governor, highlighting the collaborative efforts in disaster preparedness.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to reconvene on Thursday at 8:00 PM to reassess the meteorological conditions and determine necessary preventive actions. This proactive approach aims to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the region as Hurricane Simon continues to develop.
Community Preparedness and Response
Local authorities have been mobilizing resources and disseminating information to keep the public informed about the hurricane's progress. Community centers are being prepared to serve as shelters if necessary, and emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents resulting from the storm.
Residents have been advised to secure their properties, stock up on essential supplies, and stay tuned to official updates through reliable channels. The collaboration between government agencies and the community is vital in mitigating the risks associated with the hurricane.
As Hurricane Simon approaches, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and property. The State Council of Civil Protection's timely actions and the community's readiness will play a crucial role in navigating the challenges posed by this natural disaster.
