Community Engagement in Fire Prevention

The Government of Baja California Sur, through the Secretariat of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Mobility, Environment, and Natural Resources (SEPUIMM), has taken significant steps to enhance wildfire prevention and response capabilities. Recently, specialized equipment was delivered to community brigades in Los Cabos and Comondú, aimed at improving their ability to detect and combat forest fires in the region's vital ecosystems.

During the equipment delivery ceremony held in the Santiago delegation, Carolina Armenta Cervantes, the head of SEPUIMM, acknowledged the crucial role of community participation in forming these brigades. She emphasized that their efforts are instrumental in safeguarding the natural heritage and ensuring the safety of families living in these areas.

"The participation of citizens in these brigades is vital for protecting our natural resources and the safety of our communities,"

stated Armenta Cervantes.

Equipment and Support for Firefighters

In Santiago, the community brigade received essential firefighting tools, including two Mark-3 fire pumps, a chainsaw, a ladder, and various supplies. This support was made possible through collaboration with the municipal delegation, Costa Palmas Foundation, La Ribera Developer, and federal government agencies.

Meanwhile, the brigade from the Los Comondú oasis was equipped with uniforms, personal protective gear, and manual tools to enhance their working conditions and response capabilities. This initiative not only strengthens the brigades' operational efficiency but also boosts the morale of the volunteers who dedicate their time to this critical cause.

"We are committed to providing our brigades with the necessary tools to effectively combat wildfires and protect our environment,"

Armenta Cervantes added.

Promoting Gender Equality in Firefighting

Armenta Cervantes also highlighted the significant involvement of women in the six community brigades across Baja California Sur, located in San Ignacio, Heroica Mulegé, Loreto, San Miguel, San José de Comondú, Todos Santos, and Santiago. She pointed out that their contributions are essential in advancing substantive equality and increasing female participation in wildfire prevention and combat efforts.

"The involvement of women in these brigades is a step forward in promoting equality and empowering them to take active roles in environmental protection,"

she remarked.

The SEPUIMM is committed to continuing its efforts in community prevention and preparedness initiatives to protect ecosystems and enhance response capabilities against wildfires in Baja California Sur. As the region faces increasing threats from wildfires, these proactive measures are crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of its natural resources and communities. The collaboration between government agencies and local volunteers exemplifies a strong community spirit dedicated to environmental stewardship and public safety.
