Introduction to Cybersecurity Initiatives
The Municipal Government of La Paz is actively enhancing the safety of its citizens by implementing specialized tools aimed at preventing and addressing risks in digital environments. As part of these initiatives, the Cyber Police has been providing citizen support, receiving reports related to digital crimes, and conducting prevention and training activities in schools and community events.
Since its inception on May 19 of this year, the Cyber Police has recorded 71 reports of cyber crimes across 11 different categories. Among the most prevalent incidents are electronic fraud, with 18 cases; cyber harassment, with 16; and identity theft, with 10 reports. These figures highlight some of the primary digital risks that this specialized unit is addressing.
"The safety of our citizens requires an integral and ongoing approach, which is why we have strengthened our strategies to provide timely responses to new criminal modalities and contribute to the safety of the community,"
said a spokesperson from the La Paz City Council.
Rising Threats in the Digital Landscape
The municipal corporation has also identified a concerning increase in economic scams perpetrated through digital means, particularly via electronic fraud on platforms like Marketplace and Facebook groups dedicated to buying, selling, and services. Additionally, fraudulent loan applications have emerged as a significant threat.
In response to this alarming trend, the La Paz City Council is maintaining orientation and prevention efforts to help citizens identify potential risks and adopt safety measures when making purchases, hiring services, requesting loans, or sharing personal information online. The proactive approach aims to equip the community with the knowledge needed to navigate the digital landscape safely.
"We want our citizens to be informed and aware of the risks they face online, so they can take the necessary precautions to protect themselves,"
the spokesperson added.
Community Engagement and Support
During this period, the Cyber Police has provided 273 instances of assistance through various contact channels, including the WhatsApp number 612 205 52 44, which has become the primary means for individuals to seek guidance or report situations related to digital security. Citizens can also reach out via email at policiacibernetica@lapaz.gob.mx or through Facebook messages on the “Municipal Cyber Police of La Paz” page.
Moreover, the Cyber Police has organized 32 conferences and two informational events, benefiting 1,691 children, adolescents, and parents, along with approximately 500 individuals during community outreach events titled “President in Your Neighborhood.” These efforts are crucial in raising awareness and educating the public about digital safety.
The months of June and July saw the highest number of reports since the Cyber Police began operations. In addition to the most common crimes, the unit has also addressed cases of cyber and phone extortion, threats, misuse of images, debt collection, and extrajudicial collection practices, among other modalities.
"Our goal is to create a safer digital environment for everyone, and we will continue to adapt our strategies to meet the evolving challenges of cybercrime,"
concluded the spokesperson.
The La Paz City Council remains committed to ensuring the safety of its citizens in the digital realm, recognizing the importance of comprehensive and continuous attention to emerging threats. As the digital landscape evolves, so too will the strategies employed to safeguard the community against cybercrime.
