The State Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COEPRIS) has announced that the suspension of street food sales in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo will continue as of Thursday, September 3. This decision comes in response to the accumulation of waste and sediments caused by recent heavy rains in the southern part of Baja California Sur. The health authority aims to mitigate the risk of acute diarrheal diseases, which can arise from contaminated water runoff from local streams.

"This temporary measure is intended to reduce the risk of acute diarrheal diseases due to the water flow from the streams, which can lead to the discharge of wastewater and the spread of waste, increasing the potential exposure of individuals to pathogens,"

stated José Manuel Junco Navarro, head of COEPRIS.

Monitoring and Compliance

COEPRIS is actively monitoring the sanitary situation in both municipalities and has reiterated its call for street vendors and those operating semi-fixed stalls to halt their activities until municipal authorities complete the necessary drainage cleaning and waste removal operations. This proactive approach is crucial to ensure public health and safety during this period of environmental distress.

In Ciudad Constitución, located in the municipality of Comondú, the sale of food in public areas is also restricted. In La Paz, similar measures are being enforced in areas affected by drainage spills and locations where stagnant water remains, such as Chametla.
