Enhancing Policing Skills

In a significant step towards improving public safety, 178 cadets from the State Academy of Public Security (AESP) in Baja California Sur have undergone specialized training in various investigative techniques. This initiative, aimed at preparing future police officers for their roles, included sessions on non-confrontational interrogation techniques, open-source intelligence, detection of impostors, and recognition of counterfeit documents. The training was conducted by instructors from the Criminal Investigations Office of the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana.

The director of the AESP, Antonio Campos Navarrete, emphasized the importance of this training for the cadets, who are preparing to serve as proximity and investigative police officers. Over the course of five days, the cadets participated in intensive courses designed to enhance their skills in conducting interviews and interrogations tailored to different profiles of individuals. This training is expected to significantly improve their ability to identify impostors and fraudulent documentation.

"The collaboration with national and international institutions allows us to provide specialized training to our future police officers, equipping them with tools that promote professional and efficient performance in their duties,"

said Campos Navarrete.

Focused Training Modules

The training program included three key modules: “Non-Confrontational Interrogation Techniques,” “Open Source Intelligence and Detection of Impostors,” and “Basic Recognition of Counterfeit Documents.” Each module was designed to address specific challenges that police officers face in the field.

The “Non-Confrontational Interrogation Techniques” module taught cadets how to engage with individuals in a manner that encourages open communication, rather than confrontation. This approach is vital for gathering accurate information while maintaining a respectful interaction.

In the “Open Source Intelligence and Detection of Impostors” module, cadets learned how to utilize publicly available information to assess the credibility of individuals they encounter. This skill is crucial in today’s digital age, where misinformation can easily lead to erroneous conclusions.

The final module, “Basic Recognition of Counterfeit Documents,” provided cadets with the necessary skills to identify fraudulent documents, particularly those related to vehicle registration processes. This knowledge is essential for maintaining the integrity of law enforcement operations.

Collaboration for Better Outcomes

The training also included personnel from the Public Vehicle Registry (REPUVE), who gained valuable insights into detecting counterfeit documentation relevant to their area of work. This cross-training approach highlights the importance of collaboration among various law enforcement and regulatory bodies to ensure a comprehensive understanding of security challenges.

Antonio Campos Navarrete reiterated the significance of these training sessions, stating that they not only prepare cadets for their immediate roles but also contribute to the overall enhancement of public safety in Baja California Sur. By equipping future police officers with advanced skills and knowledge, the AESP aims to foster a new generation of law enforcement professionals capable of effectively addressing the complexities of modern policing.

The successful completion of this training marks a pivotal moment for the cadets, who are now better prepared to face the challenges of their future careers in law enforcement. With the skills acquired during this program, they are expected to contribute positively to the safety and security of their communities.
