In the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, residents of Baja California Sur faced challenging weather conditions as strong winds and scattered rains swept through various municipalities. Reports indicate that wind gusts reached up to 85 km/h, causing minor damages and prompting authorities to issue alerts for potential heavy rainfall.

According to a report shared on social media by MetMex Baja California Sur, the adverse conditions were attributed to the formation of convective nuclei over the Gulf of California and the movement of gust fronts that propelled intense winds across much of the region. The coastal areas of Mulegé, Loreto, La Paz, and Los Cabos were particularly affected.

Impact on Local Communities

Los Cabos experienced some of the highest wind speeds, with La Ribera reporting gusts between 80 and 85 kilometers per hour. In La Paz, areas such as San Juan de la Costa and Pichilingue recorded winds ranging from 65 to 80 kilometers per hour. Additionally, Mulegé and Loreto reported wind speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, while Comondú experienced moderate to strong winds in various parts of the municipality.

The strong winds led to the downing of branches, palm trees, power lines, and some utility poles, resulting in disruptions across several sectors. Although no significant damages were reported in the initial assessments, local authorities advised residents to remain vigilant regarding the evolving weather conditions.

"We recommend that citizens stay alert to the evolution of the weather conditions,"

officials stated in their advisory.

On the same day, the National Water Commission (Conagua) forecasted heavy rains with intense localized downpours across Baja California Sur. Expected rainfall accumulations range between 75 and 150 millimeters, particularly in the central and southern regions of the state, where the potential for significant precipitation is highest.

Meteorological models have identified areas requiring special monitoring, from the mountainous regions of Mulegé, Loreto, and Comondú to the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos. The report warns that these areas are the focal points for the highest risk of torrential rains in a short period.

"These are the areas of greatest risk for torrential rains in a short time,"

the report emphasized, urging residents to avoid crossing streams and to take extra precautions while driving.

Authorities also recommended that families have an emergency plan in place to prepare for potential contingencies. As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and heed warnings from local authorities.
