A Commitment to Artisan Crafts

In a bid to keep the artisanal trades of Baja California Sur alive, the Sudcalifornian Leatherwork Workshop concluded in the Historical Town of Miraflores, located in the municipality of Los Cabos. This initiative was reported by Fernando Ojeda Aguilar, the Undersecretary of Tourism from the Secretariat of Tourism and Economy (SETUE). The workshop, which took place from September 5 to October 3, was part of the Community Art Program for Municipalities 2026, offering free activities aimed at children, youth, and adults.

Ojeda Aguilar emphasized the significance of passing down leatherworking techniques, which are deeply intertwined with ranch life and the history of the region. The continuity of this craft relies on the interest of individuals to learn and apply these skills.

"Preserving traditional trades is also about protecting our history and identity. Through these workshops, we aim for new generations to know, appreciate, and keep alive the legacy of those who have contributed to building the cultural wealth of our land,"

he expressed.

The Role of Cultural Tourism

The workshop was led by master leatherworker Juan Julián González Pérez, who imparted his knowledge to participants eager to learn about this traditional craft. Ojeda Aguilar pointed out that promoting these artisanal expressions not only enriches the cultural tourism offerings but also connects residents and visitors with the customs that distinguish Sudcalifornian communities.

"The dissemination of these artisanal expressions opens opportunities to enrich the cultural and community tourism offer, bringing residents and visitors closer to the customs that characterize our communities,"

he noted.

This initiative is particularly vital in a region where tourism plays a significant role in the economy. By fostering an appreciation for local crafts, the government aims to create a more immersive experience for tourists, allowing them to engage with the cultural heritage of Baja California Sur.

Future Prospects for Artisan Crafts

The Undersecretary reiterated SETUE's commitment to continue promoting actions that recognize the value of artisanal practices and support the development of communities in Baja California Sur. This approach not only preserves traditional crafts but also strengthens community ties and enhances local economies.

"We are dedicated to promoting actions that recognize the value of artisanal practices and favor the development of the communities of Baja California Sur,"

he concluded.

As the workshop wraps up, the hope is that participants will carry forward the skills they have learned, ensuring that the art of leatherwork continues to thrive in the region. The success of this workshop serves as a model for future initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting the rich cultural tapestry of Baja California Sur.
