New Strategy to Combat School Violence and Promote Mental Health in BCS

Comprehensive Approach to School Violence
In a significant move to address pressing issues in educational environments, the government of Baja California Sur (BCS) is developing a comprehensive strategy focused on preventing school violence, enhancing mental health, and addressing addiction issues among students. Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío recently met with Dr. Katy Othon Walldez, an expert from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, to discuss the initiative's framework.
The strategy aims to tackle several critical areas, including the prevention and response to bullying, mental health support, and suicide prevention. Governor Castro Cosío emphasized the necessity of ongoing efforts in mental health, particularly for children, adolescents, and families within school communities.
"Our goal is for children and youth to have better tools to face these issues, and for their families, teachers, and school communities to receive guidance and support to act promptly,"
he stated.
Key Components of the Initiative
The initiative will be formally presented on November 5 to the legal and expanded cabinet, detailing its objectives, methodologies, and institutional coordination mechanisms. It will focus on three main pillars: addressing violence in schools, promoting mental health and addiction awareness, and providing support for suicide prevention.
As part of this strategy, a set of four methodological guides will be developed for educators. These guides will offer practical tools for the prevention, detection, and support of students facing these challenges. A multidisciplinary team of health and education professionals will oversee the creation of these resources.
"The guides will include educational and audiovisual materials, recorded videos, films, exercises, and other support tools to enhance their application in educational settings and training environments,"
Castro Cosío added.
Collaboration and Future Steps
The strategy will see collaboration from various experts, including Pablo Deng Chiw Díaz, a researcher specializing in gender equality and violence, and José Guadalupe Ojeda Aguilar, the coordinator of advisors who will aid in the methodological development of the content. Additionally, the initiative will involve the participation of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Public Education, the Mental Health and Addiction Directorate, and specialists from Salvatierra Hospital and the Psychiatric Hospital of Baja California Sur.
This comprehensive approach highlights the government’s commitment to addressing the complex challenges faced by students in BCS. By equipping educators and families with the necessary tools and support, the initiative aims to foster a safer and more supportive educational environment for all students. The focus on mental health and preventive measures is crucial in creating a resilient generation capable of overcoming the adversities they may encounter in their academic and personal lives.
