New Initiatives in Education: Strengthening Student Learning in Baja California Sur

Overview of the Integrative Exercises
The Secretary of Public Education (SEP) in Baja California Sur is currently implementing the first integrative learning exercises for the ongoing school year. This initiative, which began on August 31 and will conclude on October 16, aims to assess the progress of students and generate valuable information to enhance teaching strategies. The exercises are designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of students' learning outcomes across various educational levels.
Alignment with Educational Frameworks
Guillermo Romero Villavicencio, the head of the Evaluation and Monitoring Department at SEP, explained that this strategy aligns with the 2022 Study Plan and the Synthetic Programs of the New Mexican School. The approach is integral and contextualized, focusing on developing life skills among students.
"This strategy is aligned with the 2022 Study Plan and the Synthetic Programs of the New Mexican School, focusing on an integral and contextualized approach that considers the development of capacities for life,"
Romero stated.
The exercises are structured around real-life situations relevant to students, requiring them to solve tasks connected to four key areas: languages; scientific knowledge and thinking; ethics, nature, and societies; and human and community aspects. This method not only evaluates academic knowledge but also encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Phased Learning Activities
The integrative exercises are divided into phases corresponding to different educational levels. The phases include: Phase 2 for third grade of preschool; Phase 3 for first and second grades of primary school; Phase 4 for third and fourth grades; Phase 5 for fifth and sixth grades; and Phase 6 for secondary education, with materials tailored for first, second, and third grades of secondary school.
"The activities are based on situations related to the context of students, who must solve tasks linked to the four formative fields,"
Romero elaborated.
In Baja California Sur, the application of these exercises is conducted in a sample of selected schools based on their characteristics and social context. A total of 52 preschool institutions, 57 primary schools, and 74 secondary schools, including general, technical, and telesecundary schools, both public and private, are participating in this initiative. This diverse representation ensures that the assessment reflects the various educational environments present in the region.
The SEP's commitment to enhancing educational quality through these integrative exercises marks a significant step towards improving student outcomes and adapting teaching methods to better suit the needs of learners in Baja California Sur. As the initiative progresses, it is expected to yield valuable insights that will inform future educational strategies and policies, ultimately benefiting students across the state.
