Emotional Support Program

A New Approach to Emotional Education

Starting this school year, over 50,000 students in their third year of secondary school and in higher secondary education in Baja California Sur will participate in a new initiative called “The ABC of Emotions.” This program aims to provide socio-emotional support, prevent risky behaviors, and promote healthy coexistence among students. Alicia Meza Osuna, the Secretary of Public Education, announced the initiative, emphasizing its importance in today’s educational landscape.

"This program is designed to help students recognize and express their emotions, identify when they need help, and establish healthy relationships."

The initiative is part of a broader strategy promoted by Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, which includes guides aimed at students, teachers, and parents. These resources will help participants understand emotional recognition, the importance of seeking help, and the responsible use of technology, including social media and artificial intelligence.

Structure and Components of the Program

The program is structured around three key pillars: A for Socio-emotional Support, B for Well-being and Mental Health, and C for Coexistence and Community. Each component is designed to equip students with the tools they need to navigate their emotions and seek support when necessary.

"We want to empower young people to talk about their feelings and to know that there are alternatives for support available to them."

As part of the program, various activities will be conducted, including workshops, sociodramas, and assemblies involving parents. These activities will not only engage students but also foster a community approach to mental health and emotional well-being.

Community Involvement and Future Prospects

In addition to the school-based activities, the initiative will involve visits from brigades of the National Commission for Mental Health and Addictions (Conasama). These visits aim to strengthen the support provided to school communities and ensure that families are also involved in the emotional development of their children.

"We believe that by involving parents and the community, we can create a supportive environment that promotes mental health and well-being for all students."

The implementation of “The ABC of Emotions” reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in educational settings. As students face increasing pressures from academic demands and social media, programs like this are crucial in providing them with the necessary tools to thrive emotionally and socially.

With this initiative, Baja California Sur is taking a significant step towards enhancing the emotional literacy of its youth, ensuring that they are better prepared to face the challenges of modern life. The focus on emotional education is not only timely but essential for fostering a generation that values mental health and well-being.
