New Academic Year Kicks Off for Over 190,000 Students in Baja California Sur

A New Beginning for Students

This Monday, August 31, marks the return to classrooms for over 150,000 students in basic education across the five municipalities of Baja California Sur, along with more than 42,000 high school students. According to the official calendar, the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), Alicia Meza Osuna, confirmed these figures, highlighting the importance of this day for students and families alike.

"This is a significant moment for our students as they embark on a new academic journey,"

said Meza Osuna during a press conference.

The official ceremony to inaugurate the school year will take place at 8:00 AM at the “Hugo César Piñeda Chacón” Primary School, located in the Camino Real neighborhood of La Paz. This event is expected to gather students, parents, and educators, marking a festive start to the educational calendar.

Investment in Educational Infrastructure

Meza Osuna emphasized that during the current state administration, approximately 1.4 billion pesos have been allocated to educational infrastructure. This investment has been directed towards the construction, rehabilitation, and improvement of schools in various regions of the state.

"These efforts have significantly contributed to Baja California Sur being among the states with the best national indicators for coverage and lower dropout rates in both basic and higher education,"

she noted.

The commitment to improving educational facilities is evident, as the state aims to provide a conducive learning environment for all students. The efficiency rate in basic education has reached an impressive 99.5 percent, showcasing the effectiveness of these initiatives.

Growth in Higher Education Enrollment

In addition to the improvements in basic education, the enrollment in higher education has seen a notable increase. The number of students in higher education rose from 24,000 at the beginning of the administration to 30,000 by the end of the 2025-2026 school year, representing a 22 percent growth.

"As part of our response to the growing enrollment, we have constructed new schools and enhanced existing facilities,"

Meza Osuna explained.

Currently, 75 percent of higher education students are enrolled in public institutions, while 25 percent attend private schools. This balance reflects the state's commitment to providing accessible education for all residents.

As Baja California Sur welcomes its students back to school, the focus remains on continuous improvement in educational quality and infrastructure. The investments made by the state government are paving the way for a brighter future for the youth of the region, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to succeed academically.
