New Academic Year Begins in Baja California Sur with Over 220,000 Students Enrolled

The 2026-2027 school year has commenced in Baja California Sur, marking a significant milestone as over 220,000 students are set to embark on their academic journeys. The event was led by Alicia Meza Osuna, the head of the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), during a ceremony held at the “Hugo César Piñeda Chacón” Primary School in La Paz. This year, the enrollment figures reflect a diverse educational landscape, with more than 150,000 students in basic education, 42,000 in upper secondary education, and 30,000 at the higher education level.

"Our goal is to ensure that every student has access to quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances."

Meza Osuna emphasized the importance of equitable education, stating that it is crucial for all students to have equal opportunities for learning. During her address, Meza Osuna highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve educational outcomes in the state. Notably, she mentioned a significant increase in the average educational attainment of the population, which rose from 10.3 to 10.7 grades over the past five years.

The ceremony also featured the presence of key figures in the local government, including Claudia Elena Meza de la Toba, the Secretary General of Government, and Elmuth Castillo Sandoval, the leader of Section 3 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE). Castillo Sandoval acknowledged the labor improvements granted to teachers during the current administration, which have played a vital role in fostering a better working environment for educators.

Additionally, Armando Duarte Sánchez, the director of the host school, expressed gratitude for the support received to improve educational infrastructure.
