La Paz City Council Responds to Heavy Rainfall Impact

Emergency Operations Underway
In response to the heavy rainfall that struck La Paz this afternoon, accumulating approximately 30.6 millimeters, the acting mayor, Amor Fenech Montaño, conducted a thorough inspection across various areas of the city. This initiative aimed to assess the damage firsthand and coordinate preventive measures implemented by different municipal departments.
Fenech Montaño confirmed that the Hurricane Operations 2026 is currently active, with personnel from Civil Protection, Municipal Police, Firefighters, and other city departments addressing citizen reports and conducting patrols to identify potential risks to the public.
"We made it a priority to go out into the streets to identify the main areas that experienced any type of incident. Here, on Manuel Pineda Street, near the boardwalk, a considerable sinkhole has formed, and the Municipal Police are already placing caution tape to prevent any accidents. Tomorrow morning, we will begin to bring in machinery for cleanup, but we must remember that the forecast predicts rain throughout the week,"
the mayor stated.
Areas of Concern Identified
During the mayor's tour, several locations were inspected where issues such as sinkholes, landslides, water accumulation, and hazardous water currents were reported. Streets such as Riolita in the Invi-Chametla neighborhood, Salvatierra in Colina de la Cruz, and Palmira in Pedregal were among those identified as having significant challenges due to the rainfall.
The mayor elaborated on the situation, explaining that runoff could increase due to water descending from the higher areas of the watershed to the lower zones of the city. This means that some roads may remain temporarily difficult to navigate even after the rain subsides.
"The runoff can increase because of the water flowing down from the high parts of the watershed to the lower areas of the city, so some roads may remain temporarily complicated even after the rain decreases,"
she added.
Public Safety Measures and Community Guidance
In light of the ongoing weather conditions, Fenech Montaño urged residents to refrain from unnecessary travel during the rain and to exercise patience with roadways experiencing water currents, prioritizing safety above all.
Additionally, she reported that the Public Services team has commenced the removal of dirt and stones from the streets. The Municipal Water and Sanitation Office of La Paz (OOMSAPAS) will also follow up on reports related to the drinking water system once the storm conditions allow for the organization of necessary response efforts.
"We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens during these challenging times. Please stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel,"
the mayor concluded.
As the city navigates through the aftermath of the rainfall, the focus remains on restoring normalcy and ensuring public safety amid the ongoing weather challenges.
