La Paz City Council Activates Hurricane Operation 2026 Amid Rain Forecast

Continuous Monitoring of Weather Conditions

In response to the forecast of rainfall in the coming days, the La Paz City Council has activated Hurricane Operation 2026. This initiative involves coordinated efforts among authorities at all three levels of government and emergency response teams. Amor Fenech Montaño, the acting mayor of La Paz, shared this information during the Second Extraordinary Session of the Municipal Civil Protection Council.

During the meeting, officials reviewed the current weather conditions and the situation in the municipality following recent rainfall. It was highlighted that there were no significant damages or loss of life reported, while various institutions continue to monitor areas prone to runoff and potential impacts.

"For us, it is very important to maintain constant and accurate communication with the public. We invite everyone to consult and share information only from official channels. We reiterate to the population that today, tomorrow, Friday, and probably Saturday, there will be rainfall throughout the state; in La Paz, the forecast indicates precipitation of between 50 and 75 millimeters approximately,"

she stated.

Anticipated Rainfall and Safety Measures

During the session, Julio César Villarreal Trasviña, the local director of the National Water Commission (Conagua) in Baja California Sur, reported that while a direct impact on the peninsula is not anticipated, cloud detachments from Tropical Storm Marie could lead to rain and strong waves along the Pacific coast.

He explained that Baja California Sur is currently in the peak activity period of the cyclone season, and the existing conditions, combined with the Mexican monsoon and atmospheric instability, maintain the potential for rainfall in the upcoming days.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected for the region, ranging from 50 to 75 millimeters, particularly in the southern area, which will continue into Thursday and Friday,"

he added.

In addition, a report was presented regarding the operational conditions of various municipal departments. In terms of potable water, OOMSAPAS La Paz has 46 wells operational, four vacuum units, and eight tankers available for water distribution.

Vigilance and Community Safety

The General Directorate of Public Safety and Preventive Police, in coordination with Traffic Safety and Transportation, is maintaining a surveillance operation in areas near streams, with no major incidents reported so far. Authorities reiterated the call for the public not to attempt crossing waterways during runoff events.

The acting mayor emphasized that the City Council will continue to monitor weather conditions and prioritize identified critical points, while keeping response teams ready to address any situation that may arise. She also highlighted that despite the risks associated with rainfall, these events are beneficial for the aquifers and the natural environment of the municipality.

"We will maintain constant vigilance and readiness to respond to any emergencies that may occur, ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens,"

she concluded.
