Hospital Salvatierra Conducts Cardiac Catheterization Campaign for Young Patients

A Lifesaving Initiative for Children

The Juan María de Salvatierra General Hospital recently undertook a significant initiative by conducting a series of cardiac catheterizations for 12 children and adolescents aged between six months and 15 years. This campaign, part of a broader program addressing congenital heart diseases, took place from August 17 to 21 and was supported by the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation.

Dr. Juan Carlos Barrera de la Torre, a pediatric cardiologist at the hospital, emphasized the importance of these procedures, stating that they play a crucial role in enhancing the quality and life expectancy of young patients.

"These procedures contribute to improving the quality and life expectancy of the patients."

During this campaign, six of the catheterization procedures successfully corrected malformations, while the remaining procedures were aimed at strengthening the diagnosis of patients who will require surgical intervention in the future. The hospital's new hemodynamic unit enabled the treatment of congenital defects such as atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus, conditions that can severely impact blood oxygenation and increase the risk of cardiac and pulmonary complications.

Advanced Techniques for Complex Conditions

The cardiac catheterization process involves the insertion of a small catheter through an artery, typically via a small incision in the groin area. This minimally invasive technique allows for both evaluation and treatment of heart conditions. The recent campaign not only focused on treatment but also included diagnostic studies for children with high-complexity pathologies, providing precise imaging of their conditions to plan future surgeries scheduled for the second half of 2026.
