A Day for Grandparents

In a heartfelt celebration marking Grandparents' Day, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío led the fourth edition of “Abueleando, Impulsores de la Transformación,” an initiative organized by the State System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (SEDIF). This event aims to promote the participation and well-being of senior citizens within their social environment. The gathering served not only as a celebration but also as a platform to recognize the invaluable contributions of the elderly in society.

During the event, Governor Castro emphasized the importance of initiatives like “Abueleando” in strengthening family and social bonds. He stated,

"These initiatives help to tighten family and social ties, as well as foster values of fraternity and solidarity."

His words resonated with the attendees, many of whom were proud grandparents eager to share their experiences and wisdom.

Celebrating Contributions and Strengthening Community

The celebration included artistic performances and a communal breakfast, creating a festive atmosphere for the attendees. The event was designed to provide a space for joy and recognition, allowing seniors to enjoy a day dedicated to them. Governor Castro took the opportunity to congratulate the senior citizens of Baja California Sur, highlighting their essential role in the community.

In addition to the festivities, the SEDIF has been actively providing services at Community Meeting Points in La Paz, Los Cabos, and Comondú. These centers offer courses, workshops, and talks aimed at empowering seniors. From 2022 to 2026, these initiatives have benefited 3,566 individuals, providing them with valuable skills and personal development opportunities.

Ongoing Support and Legislative Efforts

The support for the elderly extends beyond celebratory events. Through food assistance programs, over 20,778 individuals across the five municipalities have received help from 2021 to the present. This initiative aims to uphold the right to food and improve the living conditions of senior citizens in the region. Governor Castro reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that older adults can live with dignity, support, and full participation in society.

Furthermore, the state government is working closely with the State Congress to enhance the protection of senior citizens. This collaboration aims to reform the Law on the Rights of Older Adults in Baja California Sur, incorporating measures to address issues such as abandonment, neglect, and violence against the elderly. Governor Castro stated,

"We are committed to maintaining a policy close to families and generating conditions that allow older adults to live this stage with dignity, support, and full participation in society."

The fourth edition of “Abueleando” not only celebrated the elderly but also highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve their quality of life in Baja California Sur. As the community comes together to honor its seniors, the government continues to push for legislative changes that protect and empower this vital segment of the population. The commitment to fostering a supportive environment for older adults reflects a broader societal recognition of their contributions and the need for their voices to be heard.
