Heavy Rainfall Expected in Baja California Sur: Government Issues Safety Warnings

Government's Call for Caution
In light of the forecast for heavy rainfall over the next few days, the government of Baja California Sur is urging residents to exercise caution and stay informed. During the eighth extraordinary meeting of the State Civil Protection Council, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío emphasized the importance of heeding official information and taking preventive measures against the anticipated downpours, which are expected from Saturday through Tuesday.
"We must prioritize the safety of our people and their property,"
Castro stated, urging citizens to avoid risky situations, particularly when crossing streams or traveling through flood-prone areas.
The National Water Commission (Conagua) has reported that these rains are not linked to any cyclonic phenomena but are instead the result of interacting cyclonic circulations and elongated areas of low atmospheric pressure. This weather pattern extends from the northwest of the country to Baja California Sur, creating conditions for intense rainfall.
Rainfall Projections and Safety Measures
According to forecasts, the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos are expected to receive between 75 and 155 millimeters of rain over the weekend. Authorities are particularly vigilant regarding potential flash floods that could pose risks to human settlements and disrupt roads, highways, and infrastructure.
"We are closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary actions to ensure the safety of our communities,"
the governor added.
As part of the preventive measures, the governor proposed activating the A plan for shelters starting tonight in La Paz and Los Cabos. In La Paz, potential shelter locations include facilities at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), José María Garma González Secondary School in El Centenario, Emma Isabel Osuna Mancillas School, and Gabriel Francisco Ojeda Agúndez Secondary School. The specific sites for temporary shelters in Los Cabos will be announced shortly.
Health and Safety Recommendations
The State Health Secretariat has also issued restrictions on street food sales in La Paz and has advised against entering the ocean at several beaches, including El Médano, Empacadora, the hotel zone of San José del Cabo, and La Playita in Los Cabos. Additionally, swimming is discouraged in the stretch from El Comitán to El Caimancito in La Paz until further assessments can confirm safety.
"We urge everyone to stay safe and follow the recommendations of the authorities,"
the health department emphasized.
The State Civil Protection Council will continue to monitor weather conditions and the evolution of the rainfall to reinforce preventive and response actions. Currently, both ports and airports in the region are operating normally, and residents are advised to obtain information solely from official channels of Conagua and Civil Protection.
The next meeting of the State Civil Protection Council is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, at 11:00 AM to reassess conditions and determine necessary actions moving forward.
