The community of Puerto Chale, globally recognized as a sanctuary for gray whale watching, is proving that its economic potential goes far beyond seasonal tourism. This April 2026, local authorities and producers proudly announced the first tangible results of the ambitious agro-aquaculture project implemented in the region. This initiative, which combines marine farming techniques with sustainable practices, has achieved its first successful commercial harvest, marking a milestone in the diversification of productive activities for the families of this La Paz delegation.

The agro-aquaculture model developed in Puerto Chale has focused on cultivating bivalve species, such as oysters, integrating low environmental impact technologies that take advantage of the nutrient-rich local waters. During the presentation of these initial results, cooperative leaders highlighted that the project has not only generated a new source of direct income but has also created steady jobs for women and youth in the community who previously depended exclusively on the whale watching season or traditional fishing. The quality of the harvested product has already begun to catch the attention of restaurants and specialized markets in La Paz and Los Cabos, opening up highly promising marketing channels.

We consider Puerto Chale's success a fundamental case study for the rest of Baja California Sur. The transition toward sustainable aquaculture reduces pressure on wild marine species and offers a financial safety net against climate change fluctuations and fishing bans. This 2026 achievement is the result of the perseverance of a community willing to innovate, supported by technical advice and institutional backing, demonstrating that the future of our coastlines lies in producing in harmony with nature.
