Governor Launches New Initiative for Teen Mental Health in BCS

Addressing Mental Health Needs
In a significant move to enhance the mental health and emotional well-being of young people, the Governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, has launched the program “The ABC of Emotions.” This initiative targets adolescents aged 14 to 18, aiming to provide guidance and support through various activities focused on socio-emotional health. The program was inaugurated at the Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Baja California Sur (COBACH), Plantel 03, in La Paz, where students and officials from the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) gathered to witness the launch.
"We must ensure that every student can identify what they feel, talk about their emotions, recognize warning signs, and know where to seek help when needed,"
Castro emphasized during the presentation.
The program will be implemented across secondary and high school institutions in all five municipalities of Baja California Sur, ensuring that a wide range of students can benefit from its offerings. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health, particularly among youth who face various pressures in today’s society.
Program Components and Activities
As part of “The ABC of Emotions,” the program will include orientation sessions designed for students, teachers, parents, and caregivers. These sessions will cover essential topics related to the development of socio-emotional skills, teamwork, and fostering a positive environment in schools. The curriculum is tailored to address the unique challenges faced by today’s youth, especially in the digital age.
Among the topics to be discussed are “The Digital Stain: Breaking the Chain of Fear,” “Fiction (Web) vs. Reality (Environment): A Case of Digital Alert,” and “The Traffic Light of My Reactions to Digital Violence.” These discussions aim to equip participants with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of modern life, including the impact of social media and digital interactions on mental health.
"We are committed to providing our youth with the necessary resources to thrive in both their personal and academic lives,"
stated the Governor, highlighting the program's comprehensive approach.
Call to Action for Youth Participation
The launch of this program comes at a crucial time when mental health issues among adolescents are increasingly prevalent. By encouraging young people to engage actively in the program, the government hopes to foster a culture of openness and support regarding mental health. Activities are set to commence immediately in schools throughout the state, providing students with timely access to these vital resources.
Castro's call to action is clear: he urges all teens aged 14 to 18 to take part in the program and utilize the support available to them. This initiative not only aims to improve individual well-being but also seeks to create a more empathetic and understanding community among the youth of Baja California Sur.
"I invite all young people to participate actively in this program, as it is designed for you and your well-being,"
Castro concluded, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in mental health initiatives.
With the launch of “The ABC of Emotions,” Baja California Sur takes a significant step towards prioritizing the mental health of its youth, ensuring they have the support and resources needed to navigate the challenges of adolescence.
