Governor Castro Reaffirms Commitment to Women's Rights in BCS

A Strong Message for Women's Rights

In a recent address, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío emphasized the unwavering support of the Baja California Sur state government for women in the region. During the Wednesday Conference for the People, Castro called for continued efforts to ensure that women are aware of their rights and receive the necessary support to live in environments characterized by respect, equality, and freedom from violence.

"For us, it is not just a declaration that women in the state have a space of respect, consideration, and tolerance. There must be proper attention to all groups and they must be respected,"

he stated.

The governor's remarks come at a crucial time when issues surrounding women's rights and safety are at the forefront of public discourse. The ongoing efforts by the state government, particularly through the Instituto Sudcaliforniano de las Mujeres (ISMUJERES), play a vital role in addressing these concerns. Castro acknowledged the institute's work in preventing and eradicating violence against women, as well as promoting access to justice, economic autonomy, and social participation.

ISMUJERES: A Beacon of Hope

Berenice Serrato Flores, the head of ISMUJERES, provided insights into the various programs aimed at empowering women and fostering community awareness. She reported that the institute has conducted 122 workshops focused on equal relationships, shared responsibility, and violence prevention, engaging nearly 1,500 men in these discussions. Additionally, 182 talks on digital violence reached over 3,300 young individuals.

"We are committed to creating a system of care with a focus on shared responsibility,"

Serrato Flores remarked, highlighting the institute's comprehensive approach to tackling gender-based violence.

Since 2024, ISMUJERES has also introduced online courses on gender perspective for government institutions and the general public. These initiatives are complemented by communication campaigns and projects aimed at fostering new masculinities, family democracy, and social participation, all designed to challenge cultural patterns that perpetuate inequality and violence.

As the governor concluded his address, he reiterated the importance of institutional coordination to create conditions that allow women in Baja California Sur to fully exercise their rights and thrive in safe, equitable spaces.
