Government of BCS Invests 3.6 Million Pesos in Fishing and Aquaculture Producers

Investment in Local Industries
In a significant move to bolster the local economy, the government of Baja California Sur has announced an investment of 3.6 million pesos aimed at supporting fishing and aquaculture producers in the region. Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío led the initiative, which included the distribution of outboard motors and essential equipment to enhance the working conditions of those who rely on these industries for their livelihoods. This initiative is particularly focused on producers from Mulegé, Comondú, and La Paz.
"This investment is part of our commitment to support those dedicated to fishing and aquaculture, as well as the cooperative societies involved in these activities,"
stated Governor Castro Cosío during the delivery ceremony.
The allocation of funds is part of broader efforts by the state government to ensure the sustainability and growth of these vital sectors. The fishing industry in Baja California Sur comprises approximately 6,840 producers operating around 3,700 small vessels, highlighting the extensive reach and importance of this sector within the local economy.
The Role of Fishing and Aquaculture in the Economy
Fishing and aquaculture are not just sources of income for families; they also play a crucial role in the economic fabric of coastal communities. The governor emphasized the importance of commercial, sport, and aquaculture fishing, noting that these activities generate significant employment opportunities and income.
"Commercial fishing, sport fishing, and aquaculture have an important role in the economy of coastal communities due to the income and employment opportunities they generate,"
he remarked.
In Baja California Sur, aquaculture has seen a notable increase in participation, with 652 individuals engaged in this sector. The state has maintained its position as the national leader in the production of Japanese oysters for five consecutive years, producing approximately 3,500 tons annually. This achievement underscores the potential of aquaculture as a sustainable source of economic growth.
Future Prospects and Government Commitment
The combined production from fishing and aquaculture approaches 200,000 tons, with an estimated value of around 3 billion pesos. Additionally, sport fishing contributes significantly to the tourism sector, generating further revenue for local communities.
"My administration will continue to support productive sectors to ensure the continuity of their activities and contribute to the well-being of Sudcalifornian families,"
Castro Cosío assured, reiterating the government's commitment to these industries.
As the government of Baja California Sur moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on enhancing the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing and aquaculture. This investment not only aims to improve working conditions but also seeks to foster a more resilient and sustainable economic environment for future generations.
