Government Intensifies Dengue Prevention Efforts in Baja California Sur

Overview of the Initiative

Since early August, the Government of Baja California Sur, through the Secretary of Health, has been actively conducting fumigation campaigns in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. These efforts have covered more than 4,700 hectares in an attempt to reduce the presence of the dengue-transmitting mosquito and lower the risk of infection among the population. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat dengue fever, which has seen a concerning rise in cases this year.

The fumigation actions are not limited to urban areas; they also extend to rural communities in La Paz and Ciudad Constitución, facilitated by the Vector Control Program. This comprehensive approach includes larval control through home visits, as well as monitoring of probable and confirmed cases. Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro, the Secretary of Health, emphasized the importance of these measures in safeguarding public health.

"We are committed to reducing the risk of dengue in our communities through proactive measures and public awareness,"

she stated.

Community Involvement and Recommendations

As the fumigation efforts continue into their fourth week, the state health department is particularly focusing on municipalities with higher population densities. Following recent rains, which can create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, Guluarte Castro urged residents to take preventive actions in their homes.

"We call on the community to keep their yards clean and eliminate any containers or objects that can collect water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes,"

she advised.

Residents are encouraged to wash and cover water storage containers, such as tanks and cisterns, and to turn over or dispose of any items that may hold stagnant water. The Secretary explained that mosquito larvae can develop in these environments and reach adulthood in just 7 to 10 days, significantly increasing the risk of dengue transmission.

Current Dengue Situation in Baja California Sur

As of 2026, Baja California Sur has reported 209 confirmed cases of dengue, with a staggering 88 percent of these cases concentrated in Los Cabos and La Paz. The rise in cases has prompted the health department to enhance its response and ensure that residents are aware of the symptoms associated with the disease.

"Symptoms such as fever, general malaise, muscle pain, abdominal pain, or eye pain should prompt individuals to seek medical evaluation at their local health unit,"

Guluarte Castro emphasized.

The ongoing efforts by the government highlight the critical need for community participation in preventing the spread of dengue. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, residents can play a vital role in protecting themselves and their families from this potentially serious illness.
