Baja California Sur is preparing to receive the collateral benefits of the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the federal strategy "Mundial Social" (Social World Cup). The primary objective of this program is to ensure that the world's biggest soccer event leaves a permanent footprint in communities, transforming dirt lots into dignified facilities for the youth. With an initial investment of 2 million pesos, the Sudcaliforniano Sports Institute (INSUDE) is coordinating the creation and rehabilitation of 24 soccer fields distributed across the state's five municipalities. These spaces aim not only to foster sporting talent but to serve as community hubs that strengthen the social fabric in areas that have historically lacked quality recreational infrastructure.

From a social urbanism and public health perspective, the intervention of these municipal and state lots represents a significant step forward in the fight against sedentary lifestyles and crime. The project includes 22 fields measuring 20 by 40 meters and 2 larger fields (30 by 65 meters), all equipped with synthetic grass, professional lighting, and perimeter fencing. This technical improvement will allow the spaces to be used at night, expanding options for workers and students. In neighborhoods like Los Tabachines in La Paz, expectations are high, as the transition from dirt fields to regulation courts will facilitate the organization of local leagues and flash tournaments, consolidating sports as a tool for social inclusion.

In conclusion, neighborhood committees and local leagues are recommended to begin organizing usage regulations to ensure the maintenance and durability of the new fields. Citizen participation will be key to preventing vandalism and ensuring that the synthetic turf and lighting remain in optimal condition. For the remainder of 2026, "Mundial Social" is positioned as the most tangible legacy of the World Cup for the residents of BCS, demonstrating that high-level sports can and should have a positive impact on the daily lives of local neighborhoods.
