Workshop Details

On October 22 and 23, the Secretariat of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA) will host a workshop titled "Practical Tools for Environmental and Economic Management of Oysters" in Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, located in the municipality of Comondú. The sessions will commence at 10:00 AM and will span a total of 16 hours, aimed at equipping local producers with essential skills to enhance the profitability of Japanese oyster farming.

The workshop will cover crucial topics such as "The Environment and the Oyster" and "The Oyster as a Business," focusing on environmental management, financial strategies, and commercial opportunities. Edgar Edmundo Lanz Sánchez will lead the training sessions, providing participants with valuable insights into optimizing their oyster farming practices.

Benefits for Local Producers

The initiative is designed to generate added value for families dependent on oyster farming, a significant economic activity in the region. By improving the management practices of oyster cultivation, producers can expect to see an increase in their economic returns. This is particularly important as the oyster industry has been a cornerstone of local livelihoods in Comondú.

Marcelo Armenta, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, emphasized the importance of this workshop, stating:

"This training will empower our producers to enhance their operations and ensure sustainable practices in oyster farming."

The SEPADA has been actively working to support the aquaculture sector, and this workshop is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the local economy. Over the past five years, the current administration has successfully established 16 unions of aquaculturists, fostering better organization among producers and ensuring equitable distribution of support aimed at the sector.

Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Armenta further highlighted the commitment of the Subsecretariat of Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture to continue supporting this vital industry. He noted that Baja California Sur has maintained its position as the leading state in national oyster production for five consecutive years. This achievement underscores the region's potential and the importance of ongoing education and support for local producers.

"We will keep working to promote this activity, ensuring that our producers have the tools they need to thrive in a competitive market,"

Armenta added.

As the workshop approaches, anticipation builds among local oyster farmers who see this as an opportunity to not only improve their business practices but also to contribute to the sustainability of their environment. The focus on both economic and environmental aspects of oyster farming is crucial in today's market, where consumers are increasingly aware of the origins and sustainability of their food sources.

In conclusion, the SEPADA's initiative represents a significant step forward for the oyster farming community in Comondú, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a challenging economic landscape.
