Enhancing Chronic Disease Management in Northern Baja California Sur

Training for Healthcare Professionals
In a significant effort to improve healthcare outcomes, the Baja California Sur Health Secretariat has launched a training program focused on chronic diseases in the northern municipalities of Mulegé, Loreto, and Comondú. This initiative, part of the Cardiometabolic Diseases program, aims to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to detect and manage conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease.
The training was specifically designed for medical professionals, nurses, and other related personnel from health centers and hospitals coordinated by IMSS Bienestar. The goal is to enhance their knowledge in the early detection and clinical management of these serious health issues, which can lead to permanent disabilities or even death if not addressed promptly.
"This training is crucial for our healthcare providers to ensure they can offer timely interventions to patients,"
said Janeth Ortalejo López Guerra, the Deputy Director of Hospital Care.
Focus on National Medical Protocols
As part of the training activities, workshops were conducted on the National Medical Care Protocols (PRONAM), established by the General Health Council. These protocols provide common criteria for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of priority diseases across the country. By adhering to these guidelines, healthcare professionals can ensure a standardized approach to managing chronic illnesses.
"The update will allow us to provide more timely interventions to the residents of Baja California Sur who visit medical units for preventive check-ups or to seek care for related symptoms or conditions,"
Ortalejo added.
This initiative is not only limited to public health facilities; private practice professionals in the region were also invited to participate in the training. This inclusive approach aims to create a cohesive network of healthcare providers who can collaboratively address the challenges posed by chronic diseases.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
During the training sessions, the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles among patients was emphasized. Participants learned about the significance of proper nutrition and physical activity as essential components in managing chronic diseases. Additionally, strategies to reduce risk factors such as overweight and obesity were discussed, highlighting the role of lifestyle changes in preventing these conditions.
"Encouraging healthy eating and regular exercise is vital in our fight against chronic diseases. We must empower our patients to take charge of their health,"
emphasized Ortalejo.
The initiative reflects a broader commitment by the Baja California Sur government to enhance public health and prevent chronic diseases through education and proactive healthcare measures. By investing in the training of healthcare providers, the region aims to foster a healthier population capable of managing and preventing chronic illnesses effectively. This proactive approach is expected to yield significant benefits for the communities in northern Baja California Sur, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes and quality of life for residents.
