Aquatic Therapy

A New Approach to Cancer Treatment

In a significant step towards improving the quality of life for cancer patients, the Municipal System for the Integral Development of the Family (SMDIF) in Los Cabos has launched a series of aquatic therapy sessions aimed at treating lymphedema. This initiative, carried out by the Coordination of Attention to People with Cancer (APC), is designed to provide comprehensive support to patients undergoing oncological treatment.

The aquatic therapy sessions are hosted at Acuática Vázquez, in collaboration with specialists from FisioMed and AcuaFit. This partnership reflects a growing recognition of the importance of holistic care in cancer treatment, combining physical rehabilitation with emotional support. The program is part of SMDIF's broader strategy to enhance the well-being of individuals facing the challenges of cancer.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy is known for its numerous benefits, particularly for patients dealing with the side effects of cancer treatments. The buoyancy of water reduces strain on the body, allowing patients to engage in physical activity that might otherwise be too painful or difficult. This therapy not only aids in improving mobility but also plays a crucial role in reducing the symptoms of lymphedema, a common condition among cancer patients that causes swelling in the limbs.

Blanca Gallardo, the coordinator of APC, emphasized the importance of these therapeutic sessions, stating:

"These actions seek to offer complementary therapeutic alternatives that contribute to improving mobility, reducing the effects of oncological treatment, and enhancing the quality of life for patients."

The focus on enhancing quality of life is particularly vital, as cancer treatments can often lead to physical and emotional challenges. By providing a supportive environment where patients can engage in gentle exercise, the SMDIF aims to alleviate some of these burdens.

Commitment to Community Health

The initiative underscores SMDIF Los Cabos' commitment to a humanistic approach to healthcare. By prioritizing the health and well-being of individuals with cancer and their families, the organization is fostering a community-oriented model of care. This approach not only addresses the physical aspects of cancer treatment but also recognizes the emotional and psychological needs of patients.

Through strategic alliances with specialists and the private sector, SMDIF is reinforcing its policy of close and compassionate work with the community. The integration of aquatic therapy into the cancer care program is a testament to the innovative strategies being employed to support patients during their treatment journey.

As the program continues to evolve, it is expected to draw more participants, providing them with the necessary tools to manage their condition effectively. This initiative is not just about treatment; it is about creating a supportive community that empowers individuals to face their cancer journey with resilience and hope.

The aquatic therapy sessions represent a significant advancement in the way cancer care is approached in Los Cabos, setting a precedent for similar initiatives in other regions. With continued support and collaboration, the SMDIF aims to expand these services, ensuring that every patient has access to the care they need during one of the most challenging times in their lives.
