Preventive Health Services

Focus on the Elderly

In recognition of August as the Month of Older Adults, the Government of Baja California Sur, through the Ministry of Health, is implementing preventive health service initiatives specifically aimed at residents aged 60 and above. These efforts are designed to address the unique health challenges faced by the elderly population in the region.

The Secretary of Health, Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro, emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating that they include gerontological assessments to identify the specific health needs of each individual. This approach considers not only the medical conditions present but also the socio-affective, cognitive, and functional aspects of each senior citizen's life.

"We are committed to ensuring that our elderly population receives the attention they deserve, taking into account their comprehensive health needs,"

she noted.

Comprehensive Assessments and Interventions

During these health service days, various assessments are conducted to evaluate adherence to treatments and lifestyle habits. Additionally, screenings are performed to detect potential geriatric syndromes, such as fall risks, mobility limitations, incontinence, memory loss, and mental confusion. These evaluations are crucial for establishing or reinforcing preventive and control measures tailored to each individual's circumstances.

Guluarte Castro explained that the results from these assessments help determine if further medical attention from specialists is necessary, thereby contributing to an improved quality of life for seniors.

"Our goal is to provide a holistic approach to health care for older adults, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources and support,"

she added.

Ongoing Support and Future Plans

These preventive health actions are part of the Aging Care Program, which has provided over 1,400 free consultations to seniors from January to June of this year. The program employs gerontology professionals who offer services on a rotating basis across health centers throughout the state.

The initiative not only aims to address immediate health concerns but also seeks to foster a supportive environment for the elderly, enhancing their overall well-being and independence. The government is committed to continuing these efforts and expanding the reach of these services in the future.

"We believe that by investing in the health of our seniors, we are investing in the future of our community,"

concluded Guluarte Castro.

As these preventive health services continue throughout the month, the Government of Baja California Sur remains dedicated to improving the lives of its older citizens, ensuring they receive the care and attention they need to thrive.
