Enhanced Fumigation Efforts in Comondú to Combat Dengue Outbreaks

Government Response to Health Risks
In light of the health risks posed by the recent Hurricane Polo, the government of Baja California Sur, in collaboration with the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CENAPRECE), has dispatched 16 fumigation units to Comondú. This initiative aims to strengthen efforts against the dengue mosquito, a significant health threat in the region.
The Secretary of Health, Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro, announced that out of the 16 units, seven were provided by the federal government as part of the emergency response, while the remaining nine are operated by the state government. The units are headed to Ciudad Constitución, where they will conduct preventive work to mitigate the spread of dengue.
"The coordination between state and federal governments allows us to expand preventive measures against a disease that can develop severe forms and even cause death if not treated promptly,"
Guluarte Castro stated during the launch event alongside CENAPRECE Director Alejandro Ávalos Bracho.
Current Dengue Situation in Baja California Sur
As of now, Baja California Sur has reported 263 confirmed cases of dengue, with a staggering 83 percent concentrated in Los Cabos and La Paz. Although Comondú accounts for 15 percent of the total cases, the decision to enhance fumigation efforts in the municipality was made due to the increased risk of mosquito reproduction following the heavy rains from Hurricane Polo.
To address this urgent situation, the government has planned two weeks of both daytime and nighttime fumigation campaigns across various localities in Comondú. This proactive approach aims to significantly reduce the mosquito population and, consequently, the risk of dengue transmission.
"Since August, the state government has treated over 27,000 hectares through fumigation efforts as part of measures to reduce the presence of the dengue-transmitting mosquito and maintain low hospital occupancy related to this disease,"
Guluarte Castro added.
Future Plans and Ongoing Efforts
Once the fumigation operations in Comondú are completed, the units will be relocated to Loreto and subsequently to Los Cabos. This strategic movement is designed to broaden the coverage of preventive measures against dengue throughout the region, ensuring that all affected areas receive adequate attention.
The ongoing collaboration between state and federal authorities highlights the importance of a unified response to public health crises. As the situation evolves, the government remains committed to protecting the health of its citizens and mitigating the impact of dengue outbreaks.
"We are dedicated to ensuring that our communities are safe and healthy, especially in the aftermath of natural disasters that can exacerbate health risks,"
concluded Guluarte Castro.
