Coordinated Efforts to Combat Drought in Baja California Sur

Addressing Agricultural Challenges
In a proactive response to the ongoing drought affecting Baja California Sur, the Secretary of Fishing, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA) has joined forces with the Southern Californian Council of Humanities, Sciences, Technologies, and Innovation (COSHCYTI). This collaboration aims to enhance the Strategic Drought Response Plan by developing and applying technological tools and knowledge to mitigate the impacts on the agricultural sector.
The head of SEPADA, José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that COSHCYTI is calling upon local institutions and researchers to create projects focused on water usage and productive alternatives for livestock. He noted that these efforts will also include activities for dissemination, organization, and training, aimed at bringing research results closer to those engaged in agricultural activities.
"We are committed to finding solutions that not only address the immediate effects of drought but also promote sustainable practices within our agricultural community,"
said Bermúdez Beltrán.
Collaborative Framework for Innovation
As part of this initiative, a dialogue table has been established, featuring participation from SEPADA, COSHCYTI, the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the State Water Commission (CEA), the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP), the Center for Biological Research of the Northwest (CIBNOR), the Shared Risk Trust (FIRCO), and the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS). This collaborative space is designed to connect scientific and technological advancements with the needs of production units, facilitating the incorporation of alternatives that improve their conditions.
The dialogue table is expected to serve as a vital link between researchers and agricultural producers, ensuring that innovative solutions are effectively tailored to meet the specific challenges faced by the sector. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, the initiative aims to enhance the resilience of the agricultural community in the face of climate challenges.
"This space will allow us to align our scientific advancements with the practical needs of our farmers and ranchers,"
added Bermúdez Beltrán.
Infrastructure Development for Livestock
In addition to research and dialogue, the institutions involved are actively working on addressing the needs of livestock production. They are focused on generating infrastructure aimed at producing complementary forage in livestock units that are currently facing shortages. This initiative is seen as a crucial alternative to maintain food availability for livestock during these challenging times.
Bermúdez Beltrán highlighted the progress made in previous years, recalling that during 2025, this collaboration led to the installation of nine hydroponic forage modules at various locations throughout the region. Additionally, a forage nopal plot was established in the municipality of La Paz, among other initiatives aimed at generating alternatives for livestock feed.
"These projects are essential for ensuring that our livestock can thrive even in the face of drought conditions,"
he remarked.
The ongoing efforts by SEPADA and COSHCYTI represent a significant step towards building a more sustainable agricultural future in Baja California Sur. By leveraging technology and fostering collaboration, the region aims to not only combat the immediate effects of drought but also to lay the groundwork for long-term resilience in its agricultural practices.
