Recovery Operations Underway

In response to the recent heavy rains that have affected La Paz, the municipal and state governments have launched a coordinated operation aimed at recovering roadways and managing floodwaters. This initiative, part of the Hurricane Operations 2026 plan, involves the deployment of machinery, personnel, and resources to ensure the swift recovery of affected areas.

The La Paz City Council, in collaboration with the State Government, is focusing on the cleaning and desilting of waterways, as well as the removal of accumulated water. The priority is to address the most severely impacted locations to facilitate mobility and ensure public safety.

"This coordinated effort has allowed us to identify the needs of each sector of the municipality, establish priorities, and concentrate machinery, personnel, and resources where immediate intervention is required,"

said Kenia Cervantes, the Director of Integral Management.

Areas of Focus

Among the neighborhoods receiving attention is Coromuel, where teams have been engaged in desilting, leveling, and defining the streambed of the local arroyo. Additionally, work has been done at the drainage outlet near El Progreso, and on the leveling and scraping of roads in Arenal and adjacent areas to Invi Mezquitito.

In the Civilizadores neighborhood, crews have cleaned the arroyo and scraped roadways, while in Chametla, efforts were made to prevent further water accumulation. The Altamira Boulevard also saw filling and scraping of several streets, and in Rinconada Las Californias, workers conducted desilting and water removal operations. In Santa María, the cleaning and clearing of the canal bed were carried out to promote water flow and mitigate potential damage.

"We will continue with inspections, monitoring, and direct response efforts in various areas of La Paz, prioritizing those affected by the rains and maintaining a constant watch for new hydrometeorological phenomena,"

Cervantes added.

Future Preparedness

The ongoing operations are not only about immediate recovery but also about preparing for future weather events. The collaboration among various agencies, including the Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Mobility, Environment, and Natural Resources Secretariat of Baja California Sur, is crucial in ensuring a comprehensive response to such emergencies.

As the rainy season continues, the La Paz government emphasizes the importance of community awareness and preparedness. Residents are encouraged to report any issues related to flooding or infrastructure damage to facilitate timely interventions.

The commitment from local authorities to restore normalcy and enhance the resilience of La Paz against future storms is evident. With continued efforts and community cooperation, the city aims to overcome the challenges posed by severe weather and ensure the safety of its residents.
