On October 2, 2026, the Governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, presided over a solemn public session in Heroic Mulegé to commemorate the 179th anniversary of the Heroic Gesta of Mulegé. This event highlighted the bravery of those who participated in this significant chapter of Sudcalifornian history, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring their sacrifices.

During the ceremony, Castro Cosío remarked on the necessity of understanding historical roots to foster a strong sense of identity among the people of Baja California Sur. He stated,

"We must never forget where we come from. We must always remember those who defended this land and left an example that is part of our history. Mexico is to be loved and defended."

The Historical Significance of the Gesta

The Heroic Gesta of Mulegé refers to the events of October 2, 1847, when Captain Manuel Pineda Muñoz and the residents of Mulegé bravely confronted American troops. This episode is a cornerstone of the region's history and is commemorated annually to honor the courage and resilience of those who fought for their homeland. The governor's address served as a reminder of the enduring legacy of this historical event.

As part of the commemorative program, honors were paid to the National Flag, and a detailed account of Captain Manuel Pineda Muñoz was presented by Karla Fellicia Chávez Domínguez, a student from the Captain Manuel Pineda Muñoz Secondary School. This educational aspect of the ceremony underscores the importance of passing down historical knowledge to younger generations, ensuring that the values of bravery and patriotism remain alive.

A Gathering of Authorities and Community

The event saw participation from various dignitaries, including Eduardo Valentín Van Wormer Castro, the President of the State Congress, and Claudia Jeanette Cota Peña, the President of the Superior Court of Justice. Additionally, Edith Aguilar Villavicencio, the Municipal President of Mulegé, was present, along with other civil and military authorities. Their attendance highlighted the collective commitment to preserving the memory of the Gesta and its significance in shaping the identity of Baja California Sur.

The governor's call to action resonates deeply within the community, as he urged everyone to reflect on the past and recognize the sacrifices made by those who came before them. The annual commemoration serves not only as a tribute but also as a vital reminder of the values that bind the people of Baja California Sur together.

As the ceremony concluded, the message was clear: the legacy of the Heroic Gesta of Mulegé must be cherished and shared, ensuring that future generations understand the importance of their history and the sacrifices made for their freedom. The event stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Baja California Sur, who continue to honor their past while looking toward the future.
