COEPRIS Issues Warning for La Paz Beaches Following Heavy Rains

Health Risks from Rain-Induced Contaminants

In light of the recent heavy rains that hit La Paz, the State Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COEPRIS) has issued a warning advising residents to avoid entering the urban beaches of La Paz for the next four days. This precautionary measure comes after the increased flow of streams due to the intense rainfall, which has led to the transport of sediments and waste into the bay.

The head of COEPRIS, José Manuel Junco Navarro, explained the rationale behind this recommendation. He stated,

"This advisory is issued as a preventive measure due to the runoff of sediments and debris towards the bay, which can temporarily increase the concentration of microorganisms that, at high levels, could pose health risks."

Following the rainfall, technical staff from the Clean Beaches program conducted inspections from El Conchalito to El Caimancito. They confirmed the presence of these materials along the coastline, prompting the agency to urge the public to refrain from recreational activities in these areas to mitigate the risk of gastrointestinal illnesses and infections affecting the eyes, ears, and skin.

Monitoring and Future Assessments

Once the four-day period concludes, COEPRIS plans to conduct water sampling in the affected areas. The samples will be sent to the Public Health Laboratory for analysis. Junco Navarro emphasized the importance of these tests, stating,

"Based on the results, we will determine whether the water is safe for recreational activities and will inform the public accordingly."

This proactive approach is crucial for ensuring the safety of beachgoers and preventing potential health issues arising from contaminated waters. The agency's commitment to monitoring water quality reflects a broader responsibility to safeguard public health in the region.

Temporary Suspension of Street Food Sales

In addition to the beach advisory, Junco Navarro announced that COEPRIS has also mandated the temporary suspension of street food sales in areas where sewage overflow has been reported due to the heavy rains. He urged vendors to comply with this measure to protect their health and that of their customers.

"It is essential for vendors to adhere to this guideline to ensure the safety of the food they sell."

The suspension will be lifted gradually as municipal authorities address the drainage issues causing the overflows. This coordinated effort aims to restore safety and hygiene standards in the affected areas, allowing food vendors to resume their operations once conditions improve.
