Celebrating the Wisdom of Our Elders: SEDIF Launches Fourth Edition of 'Abueleando'

Acknowledging Contributions of Older Adults

The State System for Integral Family Development (SEDIF) has announced the fourth edition of “Abueleando: Impulsores de la Transformación,” set to take place on August 28. This event aims to gather over 300 older adults from priority communities and neighborhoods, recognizing their invaluable experiences, knowledge, and contributions to the development of Baja California Sur. The initiative is designed to promote social engagement and community participation among seniors.

During a press conference, SEDIF’s General Director, Luis Alberto Ceseña Romero, emphasized the importance of this event as part of the organization’s efforts to provide comprehensive care for older adults, focusing on proximity, inclusion, and respect for their rights. He stated,

"This activity is part of the actions developed by the organization to provide integral attention to older adults."

Promoting Community Engagement

Ceseña Romero explained that participants will come from neighborhoods and communities where members of the Friends for Well-Being Groups collaborate. He highlighted that “Abueleando 4” honors both women and men who have contributed to the transformation of their communities in various ways. He added,

"These are individuals who have much to offer, and their experiences must continue to be heard and valued."

The event not only recognizes the contributions of older adults but also serves as a platform for fostering connections and social interactions. Ceseña Romero noted that through Community Meeting Points, from 2022 to 2026, 3,566 individuals have benefited from courses, workshops, talks, and community activities. Furthermore, the food support programs have reached 20,778 individuals across the five municipalities of the state from 2021 to 2026.

Legislative Support and Future Initiatives

In addition to community engagement, Ceseña Romero mentioned that during the current administration, the CREE La Paz has provided multidisciplinary care to 758 individuals over 60 years old. This includes workshops and talks aimed at this demographic, as well as their families and caregivers. He noted,

"We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for our older adults through various programs and initiatives."

Moreover, in collaboration with the State Congress, modifications to the Law on the Rights of Older Adults in Baja California Sur have been promoted to strengthen institutional mechanisms against abandonment, neglect, and violence. Ceseña Romero concluded,

"The fourth edition of 'Abueleando' represents a space to recognize the trajectory and contributions of older adults while promoting their participation in activities that favor coexistence, inclusion, and well-being."

This initiative not only highlights the importance of older adults in society but also reinforces the commitment of the SEDIF to ensure their rights and well-being are prioritized within the community.
