Baja California Sur to Establish 165 New Primary Care Clinics

In a significant move to enhance healthcare access, Baja California Sur will establish 165 primary care clinics as part of the Universal Health Service initiative. These clinics are set to open in January 2027, following the rehabilitation of public spaces, including former health houses, and the adaptation of other facilities for medical care. This initiative aims to provide preventive services and basic healthcare to both remote communities and marginalized urban areas.

The Secretary of Health in Baja California Sur, Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro, announced that the proposed list of locations for these clinics has received approval from national authorities. This approval will facilitate the allocation of resources for the rehabilitation and adaptation of these sites throughout the remainder of 2026.

“The strategy will bring preventive services and basic healthcare closer to underserved communities,” said Guluarte Castro.

Community Involvement and Professional Recruitment

To ensure the successful operation of these clinics, a call for healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, will be issued in September. These professionals will be responsible for managing the clinics across the five municipalities of Baja California Sur. The integration of health committees will also begin on September 14, aimed at fostering community participation in the management and application of resources allocated for the clinics’ establishment.

“The communities will play a vital role in the reception and application of resources dedicated to their healthcare facilities,” she added.

This community-centric approach is expected to empower local residents, allowing them to have a say in the healthcare services provided in their areas. By involving the community, the government hopes to enhance the effectiveness of the healthcare services and ensure they meet the specific needs of the population.
