Economic Impact of Asparagus Farming

Baja California Sur has established itself as a significant player in the agricultural sector, particularly through the cultivation of asparagus. Currently, the state has 8,750 hectares dedicated to this crop, which generates an impressive annual value of 2.5 billion pesos. This cultivation not only provides substantial economic benefits but also creates approximately 852,300 job opportunities, contributing to a local economic spillover of around 400 million pesos.

The Secretary of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA), José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán, emphasized the importance of asparagus as one of the state's primary high-value crops. He stated that it represents a profitable alternative for the agricultural sector, while also playing a crucial role in soil conservation and pest cycle management.

"Asparagus is one of the main high-value crops in the region, and it offers a sustainable option for our farmers."

Cultivation Areas and Agricultural Development

Of the total area cultivated with asparagus, 8,150 hectares are located in the Santo Domingo Valley, while the remaining 600 hectares are found in San Juan Londó, within the municipality of Loreto. In this region, around 4,237 producers engage in agricultural activities across the five municipalities of Baja California Sur.

During his participation in the III Forum on Scientific Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Agro-Food Systems, titled “Agro-Food Transcendence 2026,” organized by the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), Bermúdez Beltrán highlighted the Santo Domingo Valley as the agricultural heart of the state. He noted that this valley has 30,000 hectares available for planting, with 20,000 hectares designated for high-value crops, including asparagus.

"The Santo Domingo Valley is the agricultural heart of our state, with ample land available for high-value crops."

Embracing Technology and Innovation

Bermúdez Beltrán also stressed the necessity of integrating technology and innovation into agricultural practices, particularly among younger generations. He believes that enhancing production processes through modern techniques is essential for increasing productivity in the sector.

"Incorporating technology and innovation in our agricultural practices is vital for improving productivity and ensuring sustainability."

In addition to asparagus, Baja California Sur is known for its diverse agricultural output, which includes mangoes, potatoes, chilies, vegetables, dates, figs, and organic crops. These products form an integral part of the agricultural activities thriving in the state, showcasing its potential for growth and development in the agricultural sector.

The commitment to asparagus cultivation not only strengthens the local economy but also positions Baja California Sur as a leader in high-value agricultural products, paving the way for future innovations and sustainable practices in farming.
