Baja California Sur has made significant strides in its economic landscape, recently securing the fifth position in the National Competitiveness Index (ICE) for 2026, as reported by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO). This recognition highlights the state's consistent performance over the past two decades, showcasing its ability to attract investment and foster a dynamic economic environment. Alonso Gutiérrez Martínez, the Undersecretary of Economy at the Secretary of Tourism and Economy (SETUE), presented these findings, emphasizing the importance of this achievement for the region.


Strengths of Baja California Sur


During the presentation, Gutiérrez Martínez outlined several key strengths that contribute to Baja California Sur's competitive edge. The state's ability to attract investment is particularly noteworthy, alongside a robust tourism sector that continues to thrive. He stated,


"Baja California Sur has demonstrated remarkable capacity to draw in foreign investment, particularly in the tourism sector, which is vital for our economy."

Additionally, the state boasts favorable labor conditions and competitive salary levels, which enhance its attractiveness for both investors and workers. Gutiérrez Martínez also highlighted that for the second consecutive year, Baja California Sur achieved the top spot in the labor market sub-index of the ICE 2026, indicating a strong job market and favorable employment conditions.


Investment Highlights


In terms of foreign direct investment (FDI), Baja California Sur has made impressive gains, attracting $511.9 million in the first half of 2026. This figure represents a staggering 41.4% of the total national investment in the tourism sector, positioning the state as the leading recipient of such resources in Mexico. Gutiérrez Martínez remarked,


"Our efforts to create a conducive environment for investment are paying off, as evidenced by the significant influx of foreign capital into our tourism sector."

The SETUE is actively engaged in initiatives aimed at facilitating investment, ensuring legal certainty, and promoting business training. The Undersecretary noted that the department is committed to fostering conditions that support the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are crucial for the state's economic diversification and resilience.

Looking ahead, Gutiérrez Martínez expressed optimism about the future of Baja California Sur's economy. He stated,


"These results serve as a motivation to continue addressing challenges related to employment, investment, talent development, and business growth. Our goal is to expand opportunities for families in Baja California Sur."
