Advancing Towards a New Tourism Model

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27, Maribel Collins Sánchez, the Secretary of Tourism and Economy of Baja California Sur, emphasized the region's commitment to a tourism model that integrates economic growth, innovation, and community development. This approach aims to provide tangible benefits for local families while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Collins Sánchez noted that this year's theme, "Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism," encourages the use of new technologies to improve visitor experiences, increase destination competitiveness, and expand opportunities for micro, small, and medium-sized tourism enterprises. The digital transformation allows service providers, entrepreneurs, and community tourism projects to broaden their markets and enhance their marketing processes.

"We are moving towards a tourism model that not only focuses on economic growth but also values community development and innovation,"

said Collins Sánchez.

Celebrating Local Culture and Community

The current administration has actively promoted gastronomic and cultural festivals, community tourism experiences, and new attractions to diversify the tourism offering. This initiative aims to highlight the traditions, gastronomy, and identity of rural, fishing, and mountainous communities across the five municipalities of Baja California Sur.

The results of these efforts are evident. Over the past five years, Baja California Sur has welcomed more than 21 million air passengers, marking a remarkable 73 percent increase compared to the previous administration. Furthermore, the region has established 84 new air routes, including 49 international and 35 national connections.

"These achievements reflect our commitment to enhancing the tourism sector and supporting local economies,"

Collins Sánchez stated.

Economic Impact and Future Directions

The tourism sector has generated an economic spillover exceeding 120 billion pesos, significantly boosting investment, employment, and the development of businesses directly and indirectly linked to tourism. This economic impact underscores the importance of tourism as a vital component of Baja California Sur's economy.

Collins Sánchez stressed that these results must be accompanied by training, digitalization, innovation, and sustainability, particularly among small service providers and community enterprises. She also acknowledged the vital role played by entrepreneurs, workers, guides, producers, and communities in making tourism thrive in the region.

"We must ensure that our tourism growth is sustainable and inclusive, benefiting all sectors of our communities,"

she concluded.

As Baja California Sur continues to innovate and adapt its tourism strategies, the focus remains on creating a more inclusive and technologically advanced environment that not only attracts visitors but also uplifts local communities. The ongoing commitment to fostering a sustainable tourism model promises to enhance the region's appeal while ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared widely among its residents.
