Baja California Sur Enhances Its Role in Global Sports Tourism

Strengthening the Sports Tourism Sector
Baja California Sur is making significant strides in establishing itself as a premier destination for sports tourism. Maribel Collins Sánchez, the head of the Ministry of Tourism and Economy (SETUE), emphasized the importance of participating in the 4th World Congress on Sports Tourism organized by UN Tourism. This international event was led by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, alongside the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Al Nowais.
Collins Sánchez pointed out that attending such forums allows for the exchange of international experiences and best practices, fostering connections that are vital for consolidating a segment that merges sports, nature, and tourism.
"Baja California Sur has extraordinary conditions for sports tourism. We have unique natural settings and extensive experience in hosting major competitions that attract participants and visitors from Mexico and other countries,"
she stated.
Showcasing Unique Events
The region hosts numerous prestigious national and international events, including the Baja 1000, La Etapa México by Tour de France, the Astri Triathlon, and IRONMAN competitions. These events not only showcase the diversity of the destinations but also position Baja California Sur as an ideal location for sports, adventure, and nature engagement.
Collins Sánchez highlighted the significance of these events, stating that they play a crucial role in promoting the region's potential as a sports tourism hub. The influx of competitors, teams, and visitors contributes to economic growth, hotel occupancy, and spending in restaurants, shops, and tourist services, benefiting local businesses and families.
"The push for this segment goes beyond tourism promotion, as the arrival of competitors, teams, companions, and visitors generates economic spillover, hotel occupancy, and consumption in local establishments,"
she emphasized.
Commitment to Sustainable Growth
The government of Baja California Sur is committed to promoting sports tourism with a sustainable, responsible, and inclusive vision. This approach aims to leverage the region's natural advantages while protecting its heritage and ensuring that tourism growth translates into jobs, economic development, and well-being for local families.
Collins Sánchez concluded by reaffirming the government's dedication to fostering a thriving sports tourism sector that aligns with environmental sustainability and community welfare. The focus on responsible tourism practices is essential for maintaining the region's unique landscapes and cultural heritage while attracting visitors seeking adventure and sports.
"We will continue to promote sports tourism under a sustainable vision that allows us to take advantage of our natural advantages, protect our heritage, and ensure that tourism growth translates into jobs and economic development for the families of Baja California Sur,"
she stated.
