Assessment of Hurricane Polo's Impact on Baja California Sur's Primary Sector

Overview of the Situation
The recent passage of Hurricane Polo has prompted immediate action from the Secretary of Fishing, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA) in Baja California Sur. José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán, the head of SEPADA, announced that teams are actively evaluating the damage inflicted on the primary sector, which includes fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, and livestock. This assessment is crucial for understanding the extent of the impact and for planning recovery efforts.
Damage Reports from Various Sectors
Preliminary reports indicate that significant damages have been identified in several areas. In the aquaculture sector, farms located in La Poza, Santo Domingo, El Chicharrón, and Las Barrancas in the municipality of Comondú have suffered considerable losses. Furthermore, fishing activities in Puerto San Carlos and Puerto Adolfo López Mateos have also been adversely affected.
"We have identified damages in aquaculture farms and fishing activities, and we are working diligently to assess the full extent of these impacts,"
Bermúdez Beltrán stated.
In the livestock sector, there have been reports of livestock losses due to strong water currents caused by the hurricane. Additionally, damages to corrals and other productive infrastructure have been noted, raising concerns about the immediate future of livestock production in the region.
"The loss of livestock is a significant concern, and we are prioritizing our efforts to support affected producers,"
he added.
Agricultural Sector Outlook
In contrast to the severe impacts on aquaculture and livestock, the agricultural sector has reported only excess moisture without significant damage. This situation may, in fact, provide some benefits, as the recent rains could enhance the availability of feed for livestock, which has been a pressing issue due to prolonged drought conditions in Baja California Sur.
"While we have detected excess humidity, the rains could ultimately benefit our livestock by improving feed availability,"
Bermúdez Beltrán explained.
The SEPADA is committed to continuing its evaluations and will conduct further assessments to determine the specific needs of producers in the region. This ongoing effort aims to define appropriate actions to support recovery and ensure the resilience of the primary sector in the face of such emergencies.
"We reaffirm our commitment to support the primary sector during emergencies and contribute to its recovery,"
concluded Bermúdez Beltrán.
As the situation develops, the SEPADA will keep the public informed about the recovery efforts and any assistance available to affected producers. The resilience of Baja California Sur's primary sector will be tested in the coming weeks, but with coordinated efforts, recovery is within reach.
