Increased Participation and Medal Count
Between 2021 and 2026, Baja California Sur has seen remarkable progress in the realm of sports, particularly in the participation of athletes in national competitions and the acquisition of medals. This was highlighted by Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío during the recent Conference for the People, where he acknowledged the dedication of athletes, coaches, and families in achieving these milestones.
"The participation of Sudcalifornian athletes in the National Olympiad increased by 53.7 percent, and the number of medals obtained rose by 42.9 percent."
The statistics are telling; the average number of participating athletes surged from 218.2 to 408.1, while the average number of medals won increased from 77.2 to 136.3. Furthermore, the medals earned by discipline saw a notable rise of 23.4 percent, showcasing the growing talent and competitiveness of athletes from the region.
Investment in Sports Infrastructure
Governor Castro also emphasized the importance of sports infrastructure, revealing collaborative efforts with the Government of Mexico through the Social World 2026 program. As part of these initiatives, Baja California Sur has constructed and rehabilitated 26 soccer fields, including those for five, seven, and eleven-a-side games, with a total investment of 66 million pesos.
Additionally, the Emilio “Milo” Mendoza Möuett Multipurpose Gymnasium underwent significant renovations, supported by an investment of 90 million pesos. These developments not only enhance the facilities available for athletes but also encourage greater participation in sports across all age groups.
"Our administration will continue to promote healthy habits and support the integral development of children and youth in all five municipalities of Baja California Sur."
Support for Athletes and Coaches
In terms of support for athletes, Governor Castro highlighted various scholarships, incentives, and financial assistance provided to both athletes and coaches. This backing is crucial for ensuring that athletes can continue their sports careers without financial burdens hindering their progress.
The governor's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for sports is evident in the ongoing initiatives aimed at nurturing talent and encouraging participation at all levels. By investing in both infrastructure and athlete support, the government aims to create a sustainable sports culture in Baja California Sur.
"We are dedicated to maintaining actions that promote healthy lifestyles and support the development of our youth."
As Baja California Sur continues to make strides in the sports arena, the focus remains on building a robust framework that not only celebrates achievements but also invests in the future of its athletes. The combination of increased participation, enhanced infrastructure, and dedicated support systems paints a promising picture for the future of sports in the region. The ongoing efforts are set to inspire the next generation of athletes, ensuring that the legacy of sports excellence in Baja California Sur continues to thrive.
